Samsung announces 'unbreakable' OLED displays for phones

Image
Most of us know all too well the frustration that comes when a momentary slip up results in a smashed screen for your expensive smartphone — not only is it massively inconvenient, it's also often costly to repair.  Thankfully, that dreaded experience could soon be a thing of the past, with Samsung announcing the certification of new flexible OLED smartphone panels that it's claiming are "unbreakable".  Certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories), which is the official testing company for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor, the new panels were repeatedly put through a punishing real-time durability test based on military standards.  The new panel was developed using an unbreakable substrate and, in place of traditional glass, has a fortified plastic window securely adhered to it. According to UL, it managed to survive 26 drop tests from a height of 1.2 meters (around 4 feet) and came away completely uns...

Microsoft Surface Go review

Image
Microsoft’s Surface Go, its latest tablet that aims to be a smaller, and more affordable, Surface Pro is finally here. The Surface Go doesn’t bring about any major surprises, but perhaps that’s a good thing. What you see here is what should have been the core conceit of every small Windows tablet since the beginning: everything you love about the Surface Pro tablet, only smaller. No half-baked operating systems – though, this model does ship with Windows 10 in S Mode – and no strange app compatibility issues. It’s just a smaller Surface that works. Of course, there were some cuts to be made to create a Surface tablet of this size, namely in the power department, but your expectations should scale accordingly. The Surface Go is what the Surface 3 should have been years ago, and it was well worth the wait. Depending on your needs, the Surface Go could easily be your daily driver for everything from work to watching movies. In the race for the ultimate tiny tablet for...

Moto Z3 review

Image
We're pretty sure the Moto Z3 launched today, although Motorola's latest modular smartphone is itself a mod-est upgrade – at least this year. There's more to come. It'll launch on August 16, but become the world's first 5G upgradable phone next year via a 5G modem-filled Moto Mod, according to Motorola and Verizon. The Moto Z3 is the most interesting smartphone we’ve seen in 2018. Yet its potential won't be fully realized until 2019 when it taps into Verizon's budding 5G network. This is also a 2018 update to last year's Moto Z2 Force, with a taller 18:9 display, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and compatibility with all existing Moto Mods. The specs haven't changed much from the Moto Z2, and the design reflects what we got with the recent Moto Z3 Play. What's the good news here and now, before the 5G Moto Mod launches? It'll be a lot cheaper, with a price that actually undercuts the mdi-range Moto Z3 Play. Price ...

PC Game Review: EarthFall

Image
You may have already heard Earthfall called “Left 4 Dead with aliens,” and there really is no better way to quickly describe it. Almost everything—from the enemy design and behavior, the pacing of the missions, to the gunplay—so closely mirrors Valve’s zombie shooter that you could be forgiven for thinking it was a mod. For the most part, that’s not a bad thing. Stepping into the mud-caked sneakers of one of four quippy, ragtag, unmemorable survivors, Earthfall’s 10 story-driven missions task you with blasting through waves of creepy-looking aliens to complete a variety of objectives. One level has you infiltrating a claustrophobic underground facility to recover data needed by the human resistance. Another involves activating a hydroelectric dam to draw attention away from an off-map cell of allies launching a surgical strike against the extraterrestrial hive. The narrative thread running through the post-apocalyptic fight for survival is entertaining and tense, though a...
